Description
Hi everyone,

unfortunately my iron deficiency has come back for round 2 but due to a lack of private health care, I'm loath to visit a doctor. Does anyone have any dietary advice to help stabilise my iron levels?

Thanks

I won't sit here and list foods which are rich in iron, as you can probably find that information quite easily, and have likely heard of the more notorious ones like spinach. But another important thing to consider is how easily your body can absorb the iron. There are two different varieties of iron: heme and nonheme. Heme iron is found in animal muscle tissue and fish, while nonheme is mostly found in plant foods.

Heme iron is more easily absorbed by the body, but is also thought to increase the risk of cancer and heart disease, so maybe don't go to town on this type! Vitamin C, as anurag_khanal said, can also help with iron absorption if you want to stick with nonheme iron-rich foods but also make sure your body absorbs them.

As for iron supplements, I'm personally not sure how well they work (though my mum takes them), but it's probably worth watching this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29v6rNFjlLI

If you are not a vegetarian chicken liver is one of the best source. also seafood ( clams and oysters). also if you can find it, Squash and Pumpkin Seeds are also good. but it is more efficient to get iron from meat related food than vegetables. Try not to use supplement because while eating high iron food you also get other nutrients too! also it is vital for you to include foods that are rich in Vitamin B12, folic acid and Vitamin C in your diet to "absorb more iron".
