Happy Friday by the way!

And now to the questions. So, I'm trying to take up gardening as a hobby this year but there is so much to learn! I have grown indoor plants before, but outside is a different story! The elements, wreak havoc each time I try!

1.) Can lavender grow successfully from seeds in NY? If so what do you recommend?
2.) Miracle grow is Miracle grow - can it be used for everything?
3.) Aloe plant! Lots of light? Water in the summer time? Would it be alright to put it outside on occasion?
4.) And now a confession - I kind of mangled one of our mini-impatiens transferring it into another pot, it'll grow right? D: I feel really bad.
5..) I want to start a herb garden, I can't dig holes in my backyard so I was thinking about getting a half-whiskey barrel and doing it in there - any recommendation on herbs that are hardy, advice, etc?
6.) How does one get hydrangeas to grow?
7.) What are those plants with the purple pom-poms that grow on shoots called?

And...I think that's it! I've had these questions floating around my head for quite some time and I'd love to hear the advice/ideas of some of you master gardeners out there! Have a good one!

1)Can lavender grow successfully from seeds in NY? If so what do you recommend?

“The answer is possibly yes, although it does depend on a number of factors that include where you live and the actual location within the garden itself (microclimate)”

As a personal recommendation, I would suggest starting the seeds indoors and transferring them to your garden once you have healthy plants.

2.) Miracle grow is Miracle grow - can it be used for everything?

My personal experience is yes...and it works great! Miracle Grow does have some specific formulas for different types of flowers. You might try the seed starting mix when you start them, then use either the all – purpose or flowers mix when you transfer them.

3.) Aloe plant! Lots of light? Water in the summer time? Would it be alright to put it outside on occasion

Based on personal experience, make sure it is in a pot and soil that is well drained and don't overwater it! I'll be honest I have killed both aloe plants I have had by overwatering and not making sure they were well-drained (make sure the pot has a hole in the bottom...and you might even place some rocks at the bottom) Here are some articles about caring for aloe. Oh! And my personal experience with house plants is they prefer to stay in the house in the environment they are used to!

4.) And now a confession - I kind of mangled one of our mini-impatiens transferring it into another pot, it'll grow right? D: I feel really bad

Your impatien should come out of it depending on if it gets the right care (and how badly it is mangled)

5..) I want to start a herb garden, I can't dig holes in my backyard so I was thinking about getting a half-whiskey barrel and doing it in there - any recommendation on herbs that are hardy, advice, etc?
I haven't had a lot of experience with herbs, but I do know chives are one of the hardiest! I planted some in my backyard and forgot about them...they were still thriving the next spring!

6.) How does one get hydrangeas to grow?
I haven't had any personal experience with hydrangeas, but here are a couple articles:

http://www.usna.usda.gov/Gardens/faqs/hydrangeafaq2.html

7.) What are those plants with the purple pom-poms that grow on shoots called?

I think you might be talking about Allium?

Hope this helps!
